According to CNBC, Trump has said the primary goal is to prevent the sale of all German cars in the United States. So buy them now I guess?
At the very least prepare for the Buick Enclave to be a premium luxury car due to lack of choice.

If it weren’t for European imports, there would be no Donald Trump, nor wife 1 or 3.

Are we tired of winning yet?
Come on Putin, Stormy, Mueller, etc, let’s get this over with. I understand Watergate took a long time, but things should go faster now.

It would certainly make retaliatory tariffs interesting. The Germans won’t want heavy tariffs on their own cars, but they’ll probably do what they always do, put taxes on “american” things like oranges, Harley’s and Whiskey.

Might be a business opportunity for us... German cars registered in here Canada for US citizens, and we deal with the registration for you.

Lets not focus on how GM makes cars in other countries and lets focus on how we need to ban the Germans from selling their cars here.

Mercedes builds half of the cars they sell in the US in the US. Plus most of the three series are made in South Africa. It’s fucking stupid.

Germany won’t tariff anything because that’s an EU matter. But yes, EU tariffs without be aimed at products made in Trump supporting areas.

Don’t forget the US is the sole maker all of the GLE and GLS for the entire world, too. And about half the C sedans IIRC.
I still can’t get used to not say M Class and GL Class...

As catastrophically dumb a decision this would be (which in Trump logic makes it extremely likely to happen), silver lining is that maybe the idiots in Alabama (where MB has a factory), Tennessee (Volkswagen), and South Carolina (BMW) who were responsible for Trump winning those states might actually see why electing a ignorant, impulsive conman is a bad idea when it completely tanks their state’s economies.
Also gotta love 2018 Republicans. Nothing says ‘small government’ and ‘free market’ like grossly overreaching, unnecessary tariffs.

If we didn’t already have higher automotive import taxes than they do on some vehicles I’d believe you.
But the highest automotive import tax in Europe is 10% and the highest into the US is 25%.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

Redefining ‘freedom’ one step at a time.
Then again, considering the issues I’ve had with German cars in the past, maybe he’s just trying to protect us from ourselves. Yeah, no - I didn’t think so...

We don’t have higher automotive import taxes, ours are 2.5%. The 25% is commercial vehicles.

Which German imports are affected by the 25%? And which American vehicles are affected by the 10%? There’s a large difference between the two...

The foreign cars affected into the US is low because they dont even try to sell their product here because of the tariff. The whole purpose of the tariff was to make it nonviable for foreign car manufacturers to even bother trying to sell here.
Also, American built vehicles by US manufacturers affected by the 10%? Mustang, Transit, C-Max, and the Jeep lineup are all I can find, nothing from GM since they sold those brands. I kid you not, Europeans make more substantially more cars in American that are subject to the 10% than US manufacturers do.

Which American vehicles aside from a few Mustangs and similar are actually wanted by Germans? Vintage cars don’t count.

Other than the Amorak, what other vehicles would be subject to it, if they were to sell it here? The bulk of vehicles they make won’t be affected by the 25% if they wanted to sell it here, whereas every vehicle an American automaker would sell there would be subject to the 10%.

Other than a handful of Mustangs the cars that are hit by the European import tarrifs are cars by European brands. BMW and Merc crossovers. Those are the bulk of the vehicles hit by the European tarrifs. And Teslas.
GM retreated from Europe in 2017, FCA mostly sells Italian branded cars in Europe (and a few renegades) and Ford only sells Ford of Europe products.
The European brands don’t have anything of significance to offer the US market just like the US market brands don’t have any cars/crossovers in any volume to offer the EU markets. Different market demands.

That was my point, European manufacturers don’t make anything that the 25% tariff is keeping away.

Exactly, and in the same way the American manufacturers aren’t building anything that 10% tarrif is keeping away from (or renders incompetitive in) Europe. So Trump’s outrage is entirely misplaced.
